چکیده

Context Genomic-based technologies are allowing commercial beef producers to predict the genetic merit of individual animals unknown pedigree with increased ease and accuracy. Genomic selection tools that can accurately feedlot carcass performance steers have potential improve profitability for supply chain. Aims To validate ability Angus SteerSELECT genomic product differences in Australian steers, terms weight, marbling score, ossification score value, using a short-fed (100 days) or long-fed (270 finishing protocol at feedlot. Mean pulmonary arterial pressures in Angus steers increase from cow-calf to feedlot-finishing phases.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension due to hypoxia-induced pulmonary vascular remodeling is the predominant cause of right-sided congestive heart failure (CHF) in cattle. Historically, heart failure was problematic only at altitudes over 2,134 m. However, anecdotal reports suggest that the incidence of heart failure is increasing in feedlot cattle at moderate altitude (800 to 1,600 m), with late-fe...

Biological and economic performance of early-weaned Angus steers.

Over 2 yr, 45 Angus-sired steer offspring of Angus and Angus crossbred females were used to determine the effects of early weaning on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and economic return to the cow-calf enterprise. Steers were assigned by birth date to one of two weaning treatments: 1) weaned at an average age of 100 d (early weaned) or 2) weaned at an average age of 200 d (normall...

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and leptin are related to marbling differences among Limousin and Angus or Japanese Black × Angus steers

This work investigated the metabolic basis for the variability of carcass and i.m. adiposity in cattle. Our hypothesis was that the comparison of extreme breeds for adiposity might allow for the identification of some metabolic pathways determinant for carcass and i.m. adiposity. Thus, 23to 28-mo-old steers of 3 breeds, 2 with high [Angus or Japanese Black × Angus (J. Black cross)] and 1 with l...

Maternal and reproductive performance of Brahman × Angus, Senepol × Angus, and Tuli × Angus cows in the subtropics

To determine the maternal and reproductive performance of F1 cows in the subtropics, 42 Brahman × Angus, 34 Senepol × Angus, and 50 Tuli × Angus cows were bred to Angus bulls to calve first and subsequently bred to Charolais bulls to calve as 3to 8-yr-olds. Age at first calving did not differ among crossbred cows. Angus-sired calf birth weights were heavier (P < 0.01) from Senepol × Angus than ...
